Success is a very powerful word. Many people are focused on how to achieve it, and oftentimes, the reasons for wanting it aren’t authentic to us. You should follow your dreams and aspirations, no matter what they are, because that is how you can achieve happiness. So many of us have felt the motivation to achieve what we want, only to lose sight of what matters to us. No matter how your family, significant other, friends and strangers see you, this will not substitute going after what you believe in. We only have one life to live, so it’s very important to do what feels authentic to us, and not to abide by society’s expectations.

It was very hard for me to achieve this mindset at first. But now, after I started my journey to full time travel the world, I can truly realize just how much of a difference it makes. I went through being in the corporate world (which there is nothing wrong with the corporate world, it just is not my dream), to pursuing a passion that meant starting anew. I had to leave my secure job that I had gone to university for behind me, and dive into something unknown. That scared me, but my dreams were more important. So I took the leap, and I haven’t been happier since. That’s not to say it’s been easy — it’s been very scary. I lost the comfortability a 9-5 gave me, and I’ve had to keep myself motivated to stay on track to my goals. But I knew it was worth it, because as comfortable as my job was, there was something missing back then. I had achieved so much, but still — I felt like I wasn’t where I had to be. My relationship with my previous significant sometimes had challenges directly because we were stressed out from work. We were both not doing what we loved, and that impacted our relationship, as well as us individually.

That’s why I wanted to write this blog post. Because success is what you define it. It depends on how you see the best version of yourself. And I want to share some tips I use when I want to achieve something — no matter what it is. From building a 9-5 career to working on your own business, these tips are equally valid. In this blog post, I want to give you my secrets on how to accomplish anything you set your mind to.

Tip 1. Persistence: don't give up

Having persistence has been one of the main things to set me apart from others, because I never let myself give up. This is not the same as accepting failures, which we will talk about in the next point. Persistence is knowing what you want, and working towards achieving it no matter what the world throws your way. Even if you don’t know exactly how to get there, you continuously try out new ways to achieve it. It’s trying out new strategies all the time, figuring out how you can get even one step closer to your dream. It’s one of these qualities that aren’t always easy to stay with, because it only takes waking up one morning and not feeling like it to step on the road to giving up. Sadly, all of us lose our motivation. But persistence means not stopping even when it’s much harder. Even when the comfort zone is calling you back and making you think about abandoning your dreams, don’t give in. You have to push through those hard days and keep going no matter what. Keep challenging yourself!

Tip 2. Accept failures

While persistence is extremely important, failures are something you have to know to accept. Sometimes things don’t work out in your favor, but that’s not the end of the world. Look at that occurrence as a chance to say “Okay, so this is something that didn’t work”. If you perceive the process as a series of elimination, you will look at things much less emotionally. You can figure out what you can learn from it, and adapt your future strategy. Ask yourself what you can take into your next step, so that you can strengthen your chance of success. In this way, you’re taking that loss and turning it into a win. Accepting failure is something you have to learn to do no matter what you want to achieve. If you’ve read personal development books, you know that every single person who attains their aspirations has failed numerous times. You only need it to work once, even if it fails a million.

Tip 3. Don't let what others think control you

This might sound like generic advice, but it’s very important. You can’t achieve anything if you’re constantly hindered by the opinions of people. This is tough, however, and I’ve personally struggled with this for many years. It just so happens that 2020 was the year I made the most progress. But it’s a scary thing to do, because your social environment has such a massive amount of real estate in your mind. It’s something we all have in the back of our mind — how others perceive us, how you perceive yourself and what is socially accepted. When you try to do something out of the ordinary, some people might say they support you, and yet you feel judged. All of a sudden, you may have some of your friends or family members that don’t back you up and are talking behind your back about how it’s a bad idea. It’s almost always because they want what's best for you, but a lot of time they will not realize that what they think is best for you is not actually what is best for you. Only YOU know this. It can come from an unconscious place of egoism, because they fear they might not be able to spend as much time with you or control you, etc. This can easily turn a positive experience you have into something negative. It certainly stops you from taking more risks, which I have personally felt many times in my life (not necessarily from my family, but from others in my life).

People are going to think what they think. That shouldn’t dictate your life. And once you start making progress, all the people that didn’t support you are going to pop back up and pretend they were with you the whole time. It's just a part of the journey to your perceived success, and I believe you can do it if you put your mind to it.

Tip 4. Continuously learn and improve yourself

This doesn’t always mean to go back to school. But it’s one of the most important things on your path to success. I personally spend a majority of my time doing this, from listening to podcasts to learning about successful people and their journey. Figure out how you can continuously learn from people who have achieved what you want. Try to find yourself a mentor, and invest your time in bettering yourself and your skills. That’s going to be the key to continuously reaching a better version of yourself. Make sure you set yourself goals, and look for what’s missing for you to get there. Once you know, put your time and effort into getting it, whether it’s reading a book, taking a course or enrolling in school, it’s worth it if you’re going to achieve your dreams. Your future is the most important thing to invest in, so don’t undermine yourself.

Tip 5. Find ways to get feedback

If you have people who have achieved what you want, they can be extremely useful in your path. They can point out the mistakes early on, to stop you from making more. Find someone you can trust, who understands what you’re working towards and have them help you. Tell them what you’ve done to achieve it so far, what your next steps are, your losses, your wins and everything in between. Allow them to give you their honest feedback. This information will be key to bettering yourself, which will ultimately lead to you achieving what you want. You can have multiple mentors, which will all form a group committed to making a better version of each other.

Closing Thoughts

These are all strategies that have played a key role in my achieving the goals and aspirations I have set thus far. If you know your goals, and you follow these tips, you will be unbreakable. I knew my ultimate goal with my corporate job was to be able to save up the money to afford the startup costs of a content creation business. I managed to pay off my student loans and start my journey, all because I knew what I needed to do. This is where persistence came in. There were times in my job where I failed. I accepted that, learned from it and became a better employee. Was there a time when I became a content creator, where I was worried what people thought about me? Yes! I knew they were thinking “Why did this guy give up a successful corporate career just to go into something uncertain?”. This stuff went through my mind, but I never let it stop me. However, now that I’ve made much more progress in this area, people aren’t talking like that. I’ve incorporated every single tip I talk about in this blog post into my life. I wouldn’t be sharing all these things with you, if I hadn’t personally experienced them in my own life. And I’m closer to my goal, so I know you can be too!
