Guatape, Colombia is a beautiful lake town just about 2 hours outside Medellín. The nature you will find here is truly out of this world. It has the perfect combination of mountainous terrain, combined with the lovely lake you can swim in. This city is perfect for anyone who wants to have a fun time. There is so much to do and there is something for everyone.

Of course, the first step is always getting there. I was personally traveling from Medellín. If you are too, the first step is getting to the bus station. The huge terminal there allows you to take care of everything you need - there are many shops, restaurants and other venues. Getting there is super easy too - you just take the metro and stop at Caribe. A bus fare from Medellín to Guatape is about $4.54, but we decided to take a cab, which totaled $15. Since we were two people, we could split, and it ended up being very affordable. The extra convenience is worth it though, and in our case - we even made it there faster.

1. Rent a boat, take a boat tour or rent jet skis

Once there, we rented a boat to see the city while enjoying its amazing lake. We got a small motorboat to sail ourselves. This only cost us $17 per hour, which we split two ways. But such an amazing price comes only after a bit of negotiation. We made sure to be persistent, bargain like locals and not seem too desperate. This allowed us to lower the price significantly and get a bargain deal.

Otherwise, you can expect to pay between $50-$60 per hour for any of the other options. There are also some boat tours with captains as well as booze cruises. There’s definitely a lot to see in the area, so you have a lot of options to explore. The views are priceless, and you will enjoy every single minute.

2. Try out the local Asado cuisine

I’m not extrapolating when I say the local food is heavenly. We had some trout and fillet Mignon prepared on a fire grill, as well as chorizo. The restaurant we visited was called La Fogata, and I recommend it, but other places around the city are amazing too.

3. Stroll the colourful parts of Guatape Centro

You can’t visit this amazing city without taking the time to stroll its vibrant streets. They are incredibly lively, perfect for photos, and everywhere you turn - there is a new beautiful view. Even just a short walk will allow you to see so much and make your trip that much better. It’s a stunning place, and you’re in for a beautiful change in scenery with every corner that you turn.

4. Go for a cruise in a Rickshaw

This staple in the local rickshaw only costs about $3, yet will give you a priceless experience. We took one when going to our next destination, which is a huge rock with over 700 steps to climb. Nonetheless, the cruise was amazing just by itself. The rickshaw itself is similar to a taxi, but much more colorful, with huge open windows and a distinctly Colombian feel.

5. Climb on top of La Piedra (The Rock)

La Piedra is a huge natural formation that towers above everything else in this city. It’s magnificent, and you can’t miss out on it. As you can guess, the view from up top is magnificent. They even have a sign in front that says “Welcome to the rock, the best view in the world”. Make sure to get there early however, because we went at 5:30, and it was already closed.

Closing Thoughts

This concludes our experience in this amazing city. It has been a wonderful experience, perfect for a day trip if you’re staying in Medellín. We almost skipped it, but I’m so happy we decided not to, because it’s such a great place. The stunning beauty of its nature will leave you fascinated every step of the way. Not to mention the locals’ vibrant culture and colorful atmosphere of the city. Make sure to go to the rock a bit earlier, and you’ll have one of the most fun days of your stay in Colombia! As always, thank you for reading, and I wish you happy travels!
